| Artist Statement |
| I've been trying to be an artist since I was a little kid. I was never acknowledged, never encouraged. Buried, the passion never died but emerged in a variety of ways I never labeled as art – garden design, writing, quilt-making, decorating. I started studying art in high school and early college but the message was the same: "You can't really be serious about doing art." So I got serious, got a degree, got a job. Call it the "millenium effect" if you like, but in early 2000 I had an epiphany of sorts. I decided to take an art class again, do what I had put aside for years. I felt like I came home. I haven't stopped learning, haven't stopped doing art, found a community of kindred spirits. I've rearranged my life around my art, borrowed and subleased studio space in a popular artists' building for two years until I got my own space - a studio of my own. A writer by training, I understand the importance of process, of mastering your materials and your tools. As I continue to discover what I need to learn, I find new ways of challenging myself. My voice is emerging as I learn the language. I am fascinated by the human figure and its inherent beauty. Organic shapes constantly beckon. Texture, the play of shadow and light, sinuous lines, the brilliantly executed paint stroke -- I want them all. |
